Se pierde el progreso "de juego": tus aUEC vuelven a cero, y las naves, el equipo y los ítems que conseguiste jugando (comprados con aUEC o craftear) se reinician, junto con tu reputación de facciones y misiones. Es intencional — CIG resetea la economía en cada wipe grande para mantenerla balanceada mientras el juego sigue en desarrollo. Lo que no se pierde son tus naves y paquetes comprados con dinero real (quedan ligados a tu cuenta para siempre) y los blueprints que hayas conseguido, sea como sea que los hayas obtenido.
You lose your "in-game" progress: your aUEC go back to zero, and the ships, gear, and items you earned by playing (bought with aUEC or crafted) reset, along with your faction and mission reputation. This is intentional — CIG resets the economy on every big wipe to keep it balanced while the game is still in development. What you don't lose are ships and packages bought with real money (they stay linked to your account forever) and any blueprints you've obtained, however you got them.

There's no fixed or guaranteed timeframe. It depends on the ship: some reach in-game stores (like New Deal in Lorville or Astro Armada in Area18) fairly quickly, while others take several months or even more than a year to become available for purchase with aUEC in-game — and those stores' inventory also rotates. If you're interested in a specific ship, the safest bet is to check the in-game store inventory directly or ask the community, since this changes constantly.

Star Citizen isn't free-to-play: you need a Starter Pack from the official store, which usually starts around US$45. That package gives you full access to the game, a starter ship, and permanent access to your account — no subscription or anything else required to get started.
